Harmonic operation of a free-electron laser.
Harmonic operation of a free-electron-laser amplifier is studied. The key issue investigated here is suppression of the fundamental. For a tapered amplifier with the right choice of parameters, it is found that the presence of the harmonic mode greatly reduces the growth rate of the fundamental. A limit on the reAection coefficient of the fundamental mode that will ensure stable operation is de...
متن کاملFirst operation of a harmonic lasing self-seeded free electron laser
Harmonic lasing is a possible mode of operation of X-ray FEL user facilities that allows us to provide brilliant beams of higher energy photons for user experiments. Another useful application of harmonic lasing is the so-called harmonic lasing self-seeded free electron laser (HLSS FEL) that allows the improvement of spectral brightness of these facilities. In the past, harmonic lasing has been...
متن کاملFirst operation of the Israeli Tandem Electrostatic Accelerator Free-Electron Laser
Results of first operation of the Israeli Electrostatic-Accelerator Tandem Free-Electron Laser (EA-FEL) are reported. This EA-FEL utilizes a 1.4A electron beam obtained from a parallel flow Pierce-type electron gun. The e-beam is transported into a resonator located inside a planar Halbach configuration wiggler, which is at a potential of 1.4MeV with respect to the cathode. A resonator utilizin...
متن کاملFree Electron Laser Operation in the Whistler Mode
The introduction of a strongly magnetized plasma in the inner region of a Free Electron Laser opens up the possibility of generating coherent radiation in the slow whistler mode using mildly relativistic electron beams. The frequency of emission, however, is limited to below the electron cyclotron frequency. The efficiency of the device can be enhanced by tapering the guide magnetic field.
